EARLY LIFE

Sunil was born on 3 August 1984 in Secunderabad, India to father KB Chettri and mother Sushila Chettri. Sunil started playing Football professionally at Mohun Bagan in 2002. He later shifted to JCT where he netted 21 goals and appeared in 48 matches.

He plays as a striker for the Indian national team and Indian club Bengaluru FC. He is the most-capped player, and also the all-time top goalscorer for the India national team.

Chhetri began his professional career in 2002 at Mohun Bagan. He then represented JCT, Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer.

All this time, his international career was thriving. Sunil Chhetri was first called up to the senior Indian football team in 2005, and he scored his first goal against Pakistan

The 2007 Nehru Cup was Sunil Chhetri’s first international tournament and his four goals helped India lift the trophy for the first time since 1997.

It was with the national team that Chhetri gained fame and made a name for himself. He helped India win the Nehru Cup 3 times in 2007, 2009 and 2012 as well as the 2011 SAFF Championship.

At the 2018 Intercontinental Cup, Sunil Chhetri played his 100th game for the Indian football team against Kenya – where he scored a brace – and his returns helped the team win the trophy.
