The all-time top scorer for the Indian football team and its captain for the better part of a decade, Sunil Chhetri is one of the most decorated footballers in India.

Chhetri’s 72 goals for the Indian national team also make him the second-most prolific international goal-scorer among active male footballers, only behind Cristiano Ronaldo and ahead of the legendary Lionel Messi.


Sunil was born on 3 August 1984 in Secunderabad, India to father KB Chettri and mother Sushila Chettri. Sunil started playing Football professionally at Mohun Bagan in 2002. He later shifted to JCT where he netted 21 goals and appeared in 48 matches.

He plays as a striker for the Indian national team and Indian club Bengaluru FC. He is the most-capped player, and also the all-time top goalscorer for the India national team.


From a very young age, Chhetri started taking part in various football tournaments.

Chhetri began his professional career in 2002 at Mohun Bagan. He then represented JCT, Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer.

He also represented Bengaluru FC from 2013 to 2015. During the 2015 Indian Super League, Chhetri was picked up by Mumbai City for Rs. 1.2 crores, making him the most expensive Indian player at the auctions.

All this time, his international career was thriving. Sunil Chhetri was first called up to the senior Indian football team in 2005, and he scored his first goal against Pakistan

The 2007 Nehru Cup was Sunil Chhetri’s first international tournament and his four goals helped India lift the trophy for the first time since 1997.

It was with the national team that Chhetri gained fame and made a name for himself. He helped India win the Nehru Cup 3 times in 2007, 2009 and 2012 as well as the 2011 SAFF Championship.

During the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, he was also one of India's best players as he helped India win the tournament. The team qualified for their first AFC Asian Cup in 27 years in the process.

Sunil top-scored with seven goals – the most in a single edition, including three in the semi-finals and final - as India lifted the trophy at home in New Delhi. He was also named the player of the tournament.

Sporting Clube de Portugal (Sporting CP) came calling in 2012 as Sunil Chhetri ventured for a second stint in a foreign league. He made five appearances for their reserve side before coming back to India and signing for Bengaluru FC in the erstwhile I-League, which further helped him establish his credentials.

At the 2018 Intercontinental Cup, Sunil Chhetri played his 100th game for the Indian football team against Kenya – where he scored a brace – and his returns helped the team win the trophy. He also equalled Lionel Messi’s record of 64 international goals at the event and has since pulled clear of the Argentinian legend.

A record six-time All India Football Federation (AIFF) Player of the Year, Sunil Chhetri is still going strong for Bengaluru FC and the Indian football team.

Sunil Chhetri’s brilliant run at the international level has been reflected in the way he’s performed in Indian domestic football.

While the early years saw Chhetri set the I-League on fire and become the highest Indian goal scorer in the league in 2017, he hasn’t lost any intensity since moving to the Indian Super League (ISL) in 2015.


Sunil debuted in the Indian National Football team after he gained fame by showcasing his playing skills. He assisted his national team to conquer the Nehru Cup as well as the 2011 SAFF Championship.

Other than the Arjuna award in 2011, he was also honored with FPAI Indian Player of the Year in 2009 and 2018, AFC Challenge Cup Most Valuable Player in 2008, SAFF Championship Player of the Tournament in 2011, Hero of the I-League for the 2016–17 season and the Hero of the Indian Super League for the 2017–18 season.
