Anupama is one of the most loved and top-rated shows on television screens presently. Actress Rupali Ganguly plays the lead in the show, and her acting is highly appreciated by the viewers. Actor Sudhanshu Pandey essays the role of Vanraj and is the antagonist in the show. Now, this popular daily soap has just got a prequel which is airing on the OTT platform. The title of this show is Anupama: Namaste America, and it premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on April 25. The show will also have the addition of some new faces while the main characters will remain the same. Padma Shree award winner actress Sarita Joshi will be a part of this show and essay the character of Moti Baa. Also, actress Puja Banerjee will join the cast and will play Vanraj's ex-girlfriend.

In an exclusive chat with India Today, actor Sudhanshu Pandey spilled some beans on his character Vanraj and shared what viewers will get to see in the prequel. The actor said that the audience will witness how Vanraj and Anupama were 17 years ago. He also shared that this prequel will explain Vanraj's character and how his college love story plays the turning point in his life and turns him the way he is today. Sudhanshu further elaborates on his character and shares that the audience will witness how Vanraj was a very happy man in his marriage with Anupama and had two kids. He added that Vanraj wanted to do things for his family but still reached a point where things started getting a bit tense. 

The storyline of Anupama Namaste America will revolve around a typical middle-class joint family where everybody is happy together. Sudhanshu also reveals that though the show is airing on OTT, the essence of the show will remain the same because that is what people relate to. Commenting on the OTT version of the show, Sudhanshu said, "Just 11 episodes, so people will watch and feel satisfied that they saw something. Within 11 episodes they'll get to know what this whole thing is about and they will probably be able to figure out what the Shah family was from the beginning and why they have become what they have become now."

Anupama is one of the most loved shows on television, and Sudhanshu Pandey has received a lot of appreciation for playing Vanraj Shah in it. His part in the show has grey shades. In an exclusive conversation with Pinkvilla, when we asked if he is concerned about getting stereotyped as a negative character, here’s what he had to say. “I am not worried about that because what I have done with my character is, I try to strike a balance while playing it,” says Sudhanshu Pandey. 

He further adds, “Sometimes it tends to be written very negatively. So what I do is with my performance I keep in mind that I have to walk a very thin line, by not becoming negative, and by not becoming hundred percent positive too. Vanraj is a very complex, complicated character anyway. He has got so many complexities in his nature that he cannot be a normal guy, he is slightly unpredictable also sometimes”. 

Sudhanshu also explains, “He has got so much going on in his head at any given point in time that it is bound to be, and it’s a human character. Most of us are like that in our real lives also, we have got so much going on in our heads, and in different situations, we react differently. So I strike a balance, essentially just so that people don’t start looking at it as a hundred percent villain. He is not, and which everybody understands too.” 

Meanwhile, Sudhanshu is also popularly known for Band of Boys, and in a conversation with Pinkvilla a while back, another member Karan Oberoi had confirmed that the band will be reuniting for an album soon. However, Anupama Namaste American actor says that he isn't aware of that development. 

“Maybe the band is doing it. I am not a part of the band unfortunately now. But Siddharth Haldipur has decided to go back to the band, so I think four of them will definitely be doing something soon together. We are all very good friends, it's just that I am not a part of it because of my work and routine. But they probably will be coming out with something soon,” Sudhanshu concludes.

In an exclusive conversation with Pinkvilla recently, Sudhanshu Pandey who plays Vanraj Shah in the daily soap opened up on the story behind the title - Anupama - Namaste America. “It is because of her dream of wanting to go to America for a dance show. She always had this thing for dancing, and has been a trained dancer as per the show,” explains Sudhanshu.

He adds, “So the story will revolve around a couple of things, one of which, a very prominent reason, is that she wants to go to America for a dancing event. It’s like a catalyst to sort of creating the story around how women want to be on their own, have the skill, and should also make use of the skill and talent they have in spite of having a family, kids, or responsibilities. So they are going in the past, and it is actually Vanraj and Anupama’s story from 17 years ago.”

Sudhanshu states that Anupama has been a turning point in his career. “It surely has. It has given me a lot of popularity amongst the masses, especially the middle-class audience. I have done over 45 films - all big, and small - probably the biggest that India has ever seen called Robot 2.0 with Rajini (Rajinikanth) sir, and a Hollywood film with Jackie Chan. I have done films as a hero with so many heroines like Mahima Chaudhry, Raveena Tandon, and Priyanka Chopra,” says Sudhanshu. 

He further shares, “So having done so much work and having been a part of India’s first-ever boy band, I have seen a lot of popularity. But I think with the kind of reach television has today, if you have a successful show on television, it gives you an incredible reach into the masses. So that’s something that has definitely made a huge difference in terms of the following I have. It’s a show that has appealed to everybody.”

His character in the show has negative shades, which also invites a lot of social media trolling towards him. Sudhanshu admits that the trolling does affect him. “It's very human to get affected by negative comments. I don’t think unless you have achieved a different level of sadhana, where you have risen above emotions, then it maybe won’t affect you. But as human beings we all do get affected by negative trolling, because those are faceless people on the internet and they sometimes say really nasty, abusive, and disrespectful stuff,” the actor states. 

Sudhanshu says that it’s hurtful sometimes. “But I guess it is also a sign of how much it is being watched by all sorts of people, and it is affecting people. Even if I am getting trolled, it means the character is so perfectly set in people’s minds that they actually believe that we exist. So trolling I would say is also a form of appreciation. If people don’t hate Vanraj from time to time, then how would they feel the love for the other side? That's how it works. It's a give and takes kind of a relationship there,” he concludes.  

Sudhanshu Pandey has become a popular name in the television industry with his stint in the show Anupamaa. The daily soap features Rupali Ganguly, Gaurav Khanna, and Madalsa Sharma apart from him in lead roles. Sudhanshu Pandey has been appreciated for his acting. But the actor is also getting trolled for his negative and misogynist role. In an interview with ETimes, he shared about the impact of his role and how he bagged the show.

Talking about reactions on social media platforms, Sudhanshu said, “I get reactions from people on social media for my character in the show. It was new to me because I wasn’t part of the TV industry earlier, and I didn’t know how the audience of TV gets attached to characters. They start believing that what I play on show is the real me. I had to bear the trolling and negative comments on social media because of my character.” The actor added that he is enjoying the show and has made peace with the trend among the audience. Sudhanshu said the audience somewhere forgets the difference between reel-life and real life. 

Sudhanshu also shared how he came across the show and the reason for taking it up. He said, “I had met producer Rajan Shahi at an award show. He is an old friend of mine. I told him I would be interested in working on a TV show if the role was really good. A couple of months later, he called me for Anupamaa, but before that he prepared me for around a month regarding the working style of television. The long working hours… I realized it’s not going to be luxurious like films. It will be tough.”

In the show, Vanraj's (Sudhanshu Pandey) determination to make it big made him portray himself as a helpless man in front of Malvika (played by Aneri Vajani). Malvika grew fond of him because she could relate to him about how it feels to be stuck in a relationship.

Asked if Sudhanshu feels that men can sometimes use such stories to their advantage, he said: "I don't think men use anything to gain sympathy or advantage because human beings are alike, be it a man or a woman, they can both use it to their advantage or disadvantage or gain sympathy or not. So it would be unfair to say that men use it sometimes to gain sympathy. It's both ways. Even women can do that and even men can do that."

"It's a Human tendency to gain sympathy, but it's not always for the wrong or the bad or with a bad intention. Sometimes you just seek sympathy because it gives you reassurance from your people, from your loved ones, when they come and sympathize with you, so it's just a form of reassurance," he added.

However, the actor agrees that there are times when a man's voice goes unheard. He even stressed that it's expected of a man to do manly things while keeping his emotions at bay.

"Like it's expected of women or a housewife, to take care of the house and the family, it is also completely and totally expected by men or a husband to provide for the family, come what may. Whether he breaks his leg or breaks his bones or breaks his head or loses one eye or whatever, he has to look after the family and provide for them."

"So obviously being a man they are expected not to cry or to shed tears or to scream but men do take a lot of frustration into them, they take a lot of hardships, and it has a bearing on their mind and their heart. Of course and unfortunately being a man, they can't say it," he said.

"So yes, I think there is an equal amount of pressure on men and their voices sometimes because man, after all, is a man and he's got less right to complain. That's what I feel. But having said that a family is incomplete unless there is an equal amount of participation from both the ends, whether it's the husband or the wife without the wife's efforts, the family cannot be kept together, so it is an equal amount of effort from both the sides that is needed for a family to grow and the family to succeed and flourish," Sudhanshu concluded.

Sudhanshu Pandey is an Indian Film and television actor, former fashion model, and singer, who predominantly performs in Bollywood and the television industry. Currently, he is performing as Vanraj Shah in the television soap opera Anupama. Sudhanshu Pandey was born on 22nd August 1974 (Thursday) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, in a middle-class Hindu Brahmin family. Sudhanshu is the elder brother of Peeyush Pandey. There is not much information available about Sudhanshu’s family.
