Salman, a middle-class boy from a small village Mewat in Haryana, used to train kids of his village in singing to support his family. Now, as the captain of the show Superstar singer, he will be sharing his experience and knowledge with contestants from across the country.
Salman’s mother accompanied him in the finale of both Sa Re Ga Ma Pa as well as Indian Idol. During the announcement of the Result of Indian Idol 10, Salman’s mother was very tense and nervous.
But after listening to the name of his son as the winner of Indian Idol, she started dancing. According to Salman, he watched the first time that her mother danced in a lifetime. Salman Ali got singing training from his own family as the last four generations of his family have been singing to earn a livelihood.
In 2011 Salman gave an audition for Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs in front of Adnan Sami, Javed Ali, and Kailash Kher. He was so poor at that time, that he doesn’t even have money to go for Delhi Auditions.
His friend Manohar Sharma helped him and took him to auditions. During the audition, he sang “Sajda” and stunned the judges with his Sufi singing. Salman reached the finale of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs, where he won the First Runner-up. He was beaten by Azmat Hussain who was a favorite contestant of that season.
In 2018, Salman Ali once again appeared on National TV during the Auditions of Indian Idol Season 10. During the audition, he again sang, “Sajda” which bagged him to the next rounds. During all episodes of Indian Idol, Salman’s voice is admired for his high-pitched singing. On December 23, 2018, Salman Won Indian Idol 10 beating the other four finalists. He won a cash prize of 25 lakh rupees and a Datsun Go car along with a Trophy. He was featured on a few episodes of Jammin, a music show which airs on Sony TV.
Salman also appeared on superstar singers (Season 1 and 2), another music show which airs on Sony TV. Apart from reality shows Salman Ali also sang the theme song of Sony TV’s, Chandragupta Maurya. Salman also recorded a small segment in the song Sab Badhiya Hai, a promotional song for the movie Sui Dhaaga.
Hailing from a small village in Punjab, Salman Ali got his big Bollywood break with his namesake superstar Salman Khan’s film, Dabangg 3. He sang the song ‘Awara’ that has won a lot of hearts and is one of the hits on the film’s album. He recently took to his Instagram to share a throwback picture with Shah Rukh Khan where they are seen hugging each other. Salman says that he wants to thank Shah Rukh Khan and the song ‘Sajda’ from My Name Is Khan because, for him, that song changed everything. It has helped him become who he is today.
Salman Ali, Sunday, was announced the winner of Indian Idol season 10. Hailing from Mewat, Haryana, Salman had been a consistent performer and a favorite to win the trophy. Apart from Salman, the other finalists were Nitin Kumar, Ankush Bharadwaj, Neelanjana Ray, and Vibhor Parashar. Hosted by Maniesh Paul, Indian Idol 10 was judged by Neha Kakkar, Vishal Dadlani, and Javed Ali.
Talking about his big win, Salman, in an exclusive chat said, “I got really emotional. To be honest, I never thought I will win such a big show. I come from a very small town and to be able to get so much love is overwhelming. I have gone through a lot of struggles and seen many troubling times. When we were on the stage for the announcement, all this was going in my mind. And the moment my name was announced, I couldn’t hold back my tears.”
He further shared that it was his parents who have been his inspiration. The singer said, “I could see from the stage that they were really anxious about the results. Especially, my mother, she was so worried. I was trying to calm her down and asking her to smile from the stage. But I could see her tensed. And when I was announced as the winner, she started dancing. It was such a special moment to see my parents so happy and proud.”
While he received immense appreciation, Salman has also been criticized for acing only one genre. When asked about the same, he said, “Yes, some people did say that during the initial stage. But the show gave me a chance to perform various kinds of acts. Through the course, I have performed songs from all types of genres. I think that would be the best befitting reply to them.”
For the winner, Indian Idol has also been a learning ground. He shared, “I have learned so much from the judges, mentors, and all the celebrities who visited us. Apart from the trophy, I have also won the love of the people. And that is most important to me. I will really miss the show, judges and my co-contestants. We lived like a family for all these months.”
Through the show, Salman has become a social media sensation. Talking about his growing popularity, the 20-year-old shared, “I am so surprised to see my increasing number of followers. When I came on the show, I only had a couple of thousand followers. And now I am close to reaching the three lakh mark. It feels really special to see so much love and support coming my way.”
The Mewat boy also impressed all with his rendition of Sui Dhaaga and the title track of Chandragupta Maurya. Thanking the production and channel for giving him the opportunity, Salman shared, “I feel blessed to have sung for both the projects. I am thankful to Anu Malik for giving me a song in Sui Dhaaga. Also, sony TV really gave me a big opportunity by offering me the title track of one of its biggest shows. I am already over the moon.”
Lastly sharing his future plans, Salman said, “I plan to settle in Mumbai and kick-start my singing career. I want to launch albums, singles, and even playback for Bollywood. I really want to sing for all leading film stars in the near future.”Apart from winning the trophy, Salman received prize money of Rs 25 lakh and a brand new car.
Initially, Salman Ali’s family’s financial condition was not good. But his father Qasim Ali got him trained in music by Delhi singer Ustad Iqbal Hussain. For his education and home expenses, he used to sing bhajans in Jagran, and sing at weddings and parties. He studied only up to class X. Salman started singing from the age of 7. At the age of 13, he auditioned at the Saregamapa Little Champs, and in this show, he also reached the finals.
Salman Ali was born on 14 January 1999 in a small village Punhana in Mewat district, Haryana, India. The last four generations of his family have been singing to earn a living.
