Rupali Ganguly Wiki, Age, Height, Family, Husband, Biography & More

While she has been a part of many successful shows in the past, all that Rupali Ganguly craved was recognized as a versatile actress. So, she is understandably elated about finally getting her due with the TV show,  Anupama, in which she plays the title role. The family drama marked her return to the small screen seven years after she took a break to embrace motherhood.
She says, “After I quit Parvarrish due to my pregnancy, I was busy with my home and my child (Rudransh). I enjoyed every moment of it. However, when Rajan Shahi approached me for this show, the actor in me got greedy. What further piqued my interest was the fact that the concept of the show was in the zone of my father’s (Anil Ganguly) films, like Kora Kagaz, Humkadam, and Tapasya. The women in these films were strong and empowered, just like Anupamaa. When I spoke to my husband (Ashwin Verma) about it, he told me that I hadn’t got my due as an artist and said, ‘You should take it up and make us proud’. He took a break from his work so that I could get back to acting. In short, he gave me the wings to fly.”

The show with a protagonist in her 40s struck a chord with the audience. Rupali says, “To be 40 plus and not have a 26-inch waist when you’re playing the lead can be challenging at times. I always wondered if it would work. You can’t predict the fate of a show. I still can’t believe it’s happening to me and hope the bubble doesn’t burst.”

Rupali further adds, “I feel blessed and am filled with gratitude for this opportunity to return to TV after seven years with a role like this and getting a chance to prove myself. I have been part of some fantastic shows and played great characters, including a double role in Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi and a negative one in  Sanjivani because I was bored of playing positive characters. Then I was inundated with negative characters, but I didn’t want to repeat myself. Every artiste vies for that one role, which takes her a level up, where people start recognizing your work and acknowledging the fact that you are a good actor.”

Talking about the way her career has shaped over the years, she shares, “There were some people who thought that I was just a fluke. But with Anupamaa, they sat up, took notice, and admitted that there is somebody called Rupali Ganguly, who acts well. While Monisha in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai got me noticed, Anupamaa has given me the platform I’ve always craved. I am glad that I have left a mark. My epitaph will perhaps read — here lies Monisha Sarabhai and Anupamaa. Despite not being conventionally good-looking, I have finally been recognized for my talent.”

Back in 2004, Hats Off Productions gifted us with a forever go-to binged series, Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai, and even today, every time we watch the show, we are rolling on the floor with the wit of the mischievous prankster, Indravadan Sarabhai, the queen of sarcasm, hypocrisy, and fabulousness, Maya Sarabhai, un-classy and unapologetic, Monisha Sarabhai, momma's boy, Roses Sarabhai and the 'normal' in this mad family, Sahil Sarabhai. However, if we had to pick a favorite, Monisha, portrayed by  Rupali Ganguly, would be the show-stealer of the series without a doubt, who taught us to 'be yourself' and fearless. Rupali made her television debut with the show, Sukanya but rose to prominence with Sanjivani, with her negative role.

Since then, there has been no looking back for Rupali Ganguly as she became a household name with her shows, Bhabhi, Kkavyanjali, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Parvarrish – Kuchh Khattee Kuchh Meethi, Anupamaa, et al. But her every mention reminds us of her role of Monisha Sarabhai in Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai. The character which was so relatable and perfectly suited to Rupali connected well with the audience, after all, who doesn't fight for the free Dhaniya or make Hindi words in Scrabble or is a sucker for discounts. While that was about Rupali's professional life, speaking of her personal life, the actress is married to an ad filmmaker, Ashwin K Verma, who had worked as Corporate Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for New York Life Insurance Company, for over 15 years.

While Rupali Ganguly made a name for herself in the television industry, her husband, Ashwin K Verma is the owner of a creative company, New York Live Ideas Corp., which also provide complete production house services. Rupali and Ashwin are proud parents of a son, Rudransh and the family lives happily in their home in Mumbai. Rupali is an ardent social media user, who often gives glimpses of her personal life and their home on her Instagram feed. Rupali and Ashwin's home exudes the warmth of togetherness and love. Just as Rupali prefers to keep her life minus the drama and extravagance, her  House is a perfect example of the simplicity and elegance that the family likes.

Selecting the right shade for your house is just like choosing a perfect LBD for your date night, though it looks simple on the surface, it should be the hue that reflects your personality. Rupali Ganguly and Ashwin K Verma opted for the tried-and-tested neutral shade for their house, which has a timeless charm and it makes the area look even more spacious. The beige-colored walls and white flooring make the rooms look brighter and more spacious. The house features a lot of serene corners, plants, an open kitchen, and a wide balcony. The living room of the house comprises a metallic gold sofa, a center table, a matching dining table, huge TV, a chandelier, and a wall-sized painting. The living room connects to the open kitchen of Rupali and Ashwin's house, at the entrance of which is the dining table for the family to eat together.

Rupali Ganguly and Ashwin K Verma's apartment on a skyrise building give a breathtakingly beautiful, panoramic, and picturesque view of the mountains and sea from the balcony. Rupali has accentuated the balcony with plants and flowers, a perfect place to enjoy the serenity of nature while relaxing in the house. Rupali's balcony is decorated with ferns and petals. The living room and the balcony of their house connect through French windows decorated with fairy lights, allowing the sunlight to brighten up the area with the much-needed light during the day.

Rupali Ganguly and Ashwin K Verma's home have a designated corner for puja, where the couple also brings and idolizes Ganpati Bappa during Ganesh Chaturthi. Being an actress, or just being a girl, Rupali has her favorite corner in the house which is her makeup room, with a huge wardrobe section consisting of big almirahs and a large mirror with vanity lights. Rupali and Ashwin's son, Rudransh's room has a white bunk bed and a wall-sized Spiderman poster.

Rupali Ganguly had first met Ashwin K Verma when she modeled for one of his commercials and while working together, they became friends. It was Ashwin, who encouraged Rupali to join television and love blossomed between them naturally. Speaking about her love story, Rupali had once stated in an interview with The Times of India, "We were just friends for 12 years. We first met when I had modeled for one of his commercials. Then we became friends and started working together. He was my confidant, friend, philosopher, and guide. He was the one who encouraged me to join television. Love shuv kab hua pata hi nahi chala. I just know he loves me a lot. So, I am in a happy space now. We own an ad agency together and have been making commercials for the last 12 years. Our commercials have been nominated for the Emmy nine times. Ashwin means the world to me."

In an interview with the Hindustan Times, Rupali Ganguly revealed the quality she likes in her husband, Ashwin K Verma the most. Rupali was quoted as saying, "Till today, he’s my friend first and I can talk to him about anything. It’s remarkable how he tolerates me because I can be difficult sometimes. Also, we didn’t say ‘I love you to each other, nor did we propose. Somehow right from the time we were buddies, our families knew that we would get married. It was just a matter of time."

It was on February 6, 2013, when Rupali Ganguly and Ashwin K Verma had tied the knot in an intimate wedding, which was a simple court marriage with only close family members and her Parvarrish – Kuchh Khattee Kuchh Meethi and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai co-stars. After the wedding, Ashwin, who was working in the US, moved to Mumbai. Elaborating on the same, Rupali had said, "Yes, and the fact that he did that just to be with me is his biggest commitment to our relationship. He is an ad filmmaker and was a VP with an insurance company in the US, but now he’s working as a consultant with the same company. I can never live anywhere else but Mumbai, and since both our parents are here, his moving to the city was for the best."

Anupamaa actor Rupali Ganguly has revealed she was apprehensive about playing the lead role on Anupamaa as she felt overweight and wanted to look slim on screen.

Rupali Ganguly who plays the lead role of a Gujarati homemaker on the television show Anupamaa has said she was apprehensive about taking up the role. On the show, the actor is seen as a devoted mother and daughter-in-law who is often looked down upon for not completing her education. Rupali has said that she didn't feel very confident about returning to the screen after a gap of seven years. She also felt she was overweight for the role.

Rupali has been earning a lot of praise for her performance on the show which has been declared a success for its high TRPs. Rupali however, wasn't sure about playing Anupamaa as she felt that she may not look good on screen.

She told ETimes in an interview, “When I joined Anupamaa, I was a little plump and I told our producer Rajan Shahi that you want a heroine and at this age, let me lose some weight. But the producer told me that he didn't want a heroine but a mother instead. ‘I want a mother and you are perfect for the role because mothers are like this. Mothers don’t get time to hit the gym and have a perfect figure and have a flat stomach. Maa, hot hai, she will first think about her kids, family, house and later maybe she will think about herself if she gets time."

She said, “I was a housewife for seven years and was at home. So there was self-doubt when I joined the show. Will I look good on-screen, will I look fat? Especially when you were once known for having a good figure. So to accept yourself onscreen and what people will think of me like why has she put on so much weight, how will look, will my show be accepted because maybe I will be so bad, will I be able to act well after seven years gap, there were so many self-doubts.”

Marriages, they say, are made in heaven. Now, who knew, that Rupali Ganguly, the popular TV actress, would get married to her long-time friend at this juncture. According to Rupali, it was every bit a roller-coaster ride. Excerpts:

How is life post marriage? I really don’t know... I had taken two days off for my wedding — February 5 and I got married on February 6. I was back on the sets on February 10. Now that I have shifted to my Sasural, the commute to the sets has become longer and I am still living out of a suitcase. Ashwin has been very sweet. He is going around picking things up for me. I went to my mom’s house and she insisted that I wear new clothes and put on lipstick, and bindi or people would think something is wrong.

But why so hush-hush about the wedding? We did not intend to hide. We just wanted to avoid the chaos. If I were 23 or 24, I would have loved all that jazz. But in your 30s, all this seems very superficial. Plus, it was decided at the last moment. Ashwin’s sister and Jijaji, who were here from Chicago, suggested ‘Why don’t you two get married?’ They were leaving on February 8. I was like, okay, ‘Let me ask my parents. I went and spoke to my brother, who was leaving for the airport to attend a wedding in Goa. I asked him, ‘Can you please cancel your trip? I am also getting married on the same day.’ He was dumbfounded, but recovered soon and told our parents. My dad was cool. But my mom’s reaction was the best. She said, ‘Ok, there is still one month left, we will manage.’ Then I told her, sheepishly, that it was the day after. She was obviously paranoid about how she’d invite people at such short notice. But thankfully, we didn’t waste paper on invitations It was very private. I did not want to turn it into a circus, with due respect to the media. Thinking of it now, I didn’t do a thing for my wedding. I was sleepwalking through it.

was howling and throwing tantrums since I didn’t have a sari to wear at my wedding. Ashwin was his calm self. He said, ‘Why don’t you wear your jeans and come?’ Then I took out one of the new saris that I had bought last October for my court wedding, which did not happen as I did not have time. It was a simple sari. Then on my actual wedding morning, I sent it to my designer to glam it up a bit. I paired it with an old blouse and petticoat that I had worn at my brother’s wedding. Last moment it tore near the arms because I had gained weight and then again there was chaos. I went shopping in the morning as I had no shoes either. At 2 pm I realized that there was no one to do the makeup.

I convinced a makeup artist who was drinking with friends to come and do my makeup. Then, we somehow convinced one Arya Samaj pujari who agreed to take out just half an hour in between his assignments to read some Kanyadaan mantras. But as luck would have it, Ashwin was stuck in some no entry and got late. Also, my phone slipped from my hand and broke. I didn’t have any numbers. While I was all decked up in makeup and jewelry, Ashwin trooped in with just Jijaji and His man Friday. He was dressed casually in trousers and a shirt Being in America for all these years, he thought he would just sign formally like an American. He looks visibly shocked in all the wedding pictures! Then Ashwin had arranged for a party in the evening. He arranged everything, right from the menu to the venue. Last moment, he dropped me at the party venue and disappeared to wash the vermillion tilak that my mother had put on his forehead. He was so late in coming back that I thought he ran away after getting married. I had no idea when he returned. The next morning, it suddenly struck me that I was married. It was Ashwin who invited my co-stars from Parrvarish and Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai. My children from Parrvarish came and were like, ‘Aaj meri mummy ki Shadi hai.’

Tell us something about Ashwin… We were just friends for 12 years. We first met when I had modeled for one of his commercials. Then we became friends and started working together. He was my confidant, friend, philosopher, and guide. He was the one who encouraged me to join television. Love shuv kab hua pata hi nahi chala. I just know he loves me a lot. So I am in a happy space now. We own an ad agency together and have been making commercials for the last 12 years. Our commercials have been nominated for the Emmy nine times. Ashwin means the world to me.
