Randeep Hooda started his film career with Monsoon wedding directed by Mira Nair. He played a small role in the film called Rahul Chadha and was able to leave his imprint on the part. Monsoon Wedding came out in 2001, and Randeep’s next release as a leading man was ‘D’ directed by ace filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma. Randeep has been acting on stage and in films for nearly two decades now and is responsible for some of the most memorable performances in Hindi cinema. As the star celebrates his birthday, here is looking at five of his most extraordinary performances that left an undying mark on the audience’s hearts.

Directed by Karan Johar, Randeep Hooda acted alongside Rani Mukherjee and Saqib Saleem in one of the short films from the anthology. Randeep played a closeted homosexual who is afraid to confront his reality when instigated by Saqib, who played an openly homosexual character. Randeep gave a heartwrenching performance as a man torn apart between his marriage and his real self.

Randeep Hooda played the character of ACP Agnel Wilson, who is in charge of removing the mafia from Mumbai in the ’70s. Naturally, Randeep’s character does not succeed and has to live with the enormous guilt of empowering one gangster (Emraan Hashmi’s Shoaib) to defeat another one (Ajay Devgn’s Sultan Mirza). Randeep’s portrayal of a man at the end of his run proved to be nearly existential.

Randeep played a local man from the suburbs of Haryana who is operating in a reality of his own named Shankar Malik. Randeep’s character proves to be a boon and a curse at the same time for Rajesh Dhiman played by Akshay Oberoi. The film did not receive maximum praise from the audience however Randeep’s half-drunk character shined through.

The Highway actor Randeep Hooda has opened up about the approach he follows in his work. In an interview with a leading daily, Randeep said that he doesn’t crave recognition or awards. He instead focuses on what he can gain from his experiences. Randeep also added that his job is nothing else but ‘contractual work’ for him.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, the actor said, “My job is just like anybody else. I'm a contractual professional having contractual work. Every time you take up a contractual job, you’ve to fulfill it. Apart from that job, there’s not much of an interaction with the so-called industry so to speak. I don’t crave or give a damn about the awards or recognition,” said the 44-year-old.

Randeep Hooda has proved his mettle as a performer with prolific performances in films like ‘Highway’, ‘Once upon a time in Mumbai’, and ‘Cocktail’ amongst others. The actor started his journey in the film industry with Ram Gopal Varma's directorial ‘D’ in 2005 which was a gangster crime drama. In an interview with Indian Express in 2011, Randeep Hooda mentioned that he was working with Naseeruddin Shah at this theater group called ‘Motley’ when he got selected for ‘D’ by RGV. Randeep said that Ram Gopal Varma put him on a roll for 35,000 for the next three years.

Randeep Hooda in an interview with Curly Tales spoke about his experience with Ram Gopal Varma and said, “I was picked up by Ram Gopal Varma from the theater. He said I am going to launch you so don’t do any other work. How much do you need a month, I said, “35,000”. So for three years he paid me 35,000 for me to sit at home and do nothing.” As mentioned in a report in Hindustan Times, Randeep spoke to a leading daily about RGV and said, “I was on Ram Gopal Varma’s payroll for 35,000 per month for four years to not work with anyone else. He gave me a great movie after that. Beyond that, both of us couldn’t see a great movie together. I got better offers after that but turned them down for silly reasons. Reasons which didn’t matter."

Further in the report, it mentioned that allegedly RGV discouraged Randeep Hooda to sign Rang De Basanti. Randeep said, “I was offered Rang De Basanti. Ramu remarked that I wasn’t the leading man, asked how much money I was getting, etc…. I got a lot of advice from a lot. I worked on eight films with first-time directors. I met many people, and each time I thought the person was my Martin Scorsese. Then there came a time when I stopped reading the papers or hanging out with filmi people. The lack of success can even make you look different. It takes the energy out of you and that’s what happened to me."

ArrestRandeepHooda has been trending on Twitter since Thursday night after a social media user posted a 2012 clip of Randeep Hooda, wherein he was seen passing a comment against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati. Calling out the comment, the user said, “if this does not explain how casteist and sexist this society is, especially towards Dalit women, I don’t know what will. the “joke”, the audacity, the crowd. Randeep Hooda, a top Bollywood actor talking about a Dalit woman, who has been the voice of the oppressed.”

As the controversy elevated and translated into a movement on social media, the secretariat of the Convention for Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), which is the environmental treaty of the United Nation, issued a statement to announce that Randeep has been removed as it’s ambassador due to the sexist and casteist remarks. “The CMS Secretariat finds the comments in the video to be offensive and they do not reflect the values of the CMS Secretariat or the United Nations. Mr. Hooda no longer serves as a CMS ambassador,” read the statement.

Randeep is yet to issue a statement on this matter. For those unaware, Randeep was appointed as the CMS Ambassador for Migratory Species in February 2020 for a tenure of 3 years. While CMS is a treaty of the United Nations, the statement back in the past had clarified that it is separate from both the UN Secretariat and the UN Environment Programme and the only entity for which Randeep served as a brand ambassador was CMS.

Randeep Hooda has been making the headlines ever since he has been roped in for Salman Khan's Starrer Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai. The actor will be seen playing the role of the lead antagonist in the cop drama and ever since the makers have unveiled the trailer of the movie, Randeep’s baddie role is grabbing a lot of attention. To note, Randeep plays the role of a drug lord and will be seen locking horns with Salman and will be giving a tough fight to him.

And now, the makers have released a new poster of the movie featuring Randeep and it has added to the audience’s excitement. In the new poster, Randeep was seen dressed in an all-black dress and was also sporting a semi-main bun. He had completed his look with sunglasses and his swag as a villain was undoubtedly making heads turn. Looks like Randeep’s massive fan following will be in for a treat with Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai. Interestingly, Randeep also shared the poster on his social media account and introduced his character as Rana.

The Randeep Hooda and Chris Hemsworth Starrer Extraction had released on April 24 last year, and even after a year the action-thriller still continues to entertain fans from all over the world. In a recent exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, Randeep says that he has got an overwhelming response for the Russo Brothers’ production. “It was as if you know I went to the Olympics, with India against Australia and America maybe, and we did well. So that was the kind of response that I got from the audience. And the action of course is mind-blowing, so that was something new for me. It opened up my global audience, whether it’s the media there or the audience. The back of this movie was released during the pandemic ground last year at this time, and still, all over again we are sitting at home. So it might not be a bad idea to watch it again, I might,” smiles the actor.

He adds that Extraction was always meant to be a Netflix film. “It was going to release on OTT because on a big screen this movie will have another kind of spectacle. So there was a plan to release it on a very brief scale in the cinemas, but it was always going to reach people through OTT. So this was a no-brainer,” states Randeep. After its release, Extraction received a lot of love from all quarters, but not many from Bollywood celebrated the film or commented on it. Did Randeep miss that?

“Well, I’m quite used to it. It does happen time and again, well that’s okay. Maybe they didn’t like my acting, liked my action maybe, that’s why they didn’t speak up. But yeah there are a lot of hooplas that happen you know amongst people within the industry which did not happen for this. But, hey maybe as I said before maybe you didn’t like my acting,” says Randeep.

Randeep Hooda, who made his Hollywood debut in 2020 with Russo Brothers 'Extraction', now has an interesting lineup of movies this year. The actor will be giving the audiences something brand new as the antagonist in Salman Khan's Starrer Radhe Your Most Wanted Bhai. He will also be uniting onscreen with Illeana D'cruz for Unfair and Lovely.

Apart from these motion pictures, Hooda is also all ready to take his journey in the streaming space forward with a cop thriller series. Titled  Inspector Avinash, the series will be helmed by Neeraj Pathak and is based on the real-life events of police officer Avinash Mishra.

Set in Uttar Pradesh, Randeep Hooda's cop avatar will be in a dramatic retelling of the life of the famed cop dealing with criminal activities of the state. The actor took to social media to give his fans and followers a glimpse of his look and make the big announcement.

I'm thrilled to start the year with this series and looking forward to presenting a thorough entertainer to the audience with this one." This will be Randeep's leading debut role in the streaming space as he was earlier seen in Mira Nair's A Suitable Boy.
