Jazbaa is doing the rounds in the media as it is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's comeback film, but today we talk with the parallel lead of the film, Priya Banerjee who is making her dream debut with Jazbaa. She enlightens us about her role, how she was cast, and her experience of meeting the cast for the first time. Tell us a bit about your role in the film. I play a 20-year-old college student in the film. I am also shown as a painter, I am very creative in the film. I also have an edgy part and there is a backdrop to why I am the way I am shown in the film, but I cannot talk about it right now.
I am actually playing Shabana Azmi's daughter in the film. How were you cast for the film? It's a very weird story actually. I am pretty active on Twitter and I keep getting many links and tags from the South films that I do. So, someone from there tagged Mr. Gupta as one of my song links. He saw it and he was in fact casting for my character at that time, so he asked the casting director if he knew me. Fortunately, the casting director happened to know me as he had auditioned me for a film before, so he replied "That's Priya, I know her." He called me and he didn't tell me anything about the movie, he just told me to come to meet him as he has some project for me
. I met him and he just told me a brief about the role and the story, he didn't say who else was there in the film, he just mentioned that Sanjay Gupta is the director. I liked the script very much and I told him that I would love to do the film, that's when he revealed that the film is Aishwarya's comeback film and Irfan Khan is also there and so on. When you came to know about the rest of your cast, what was your first reaction? I was super happy. I told the casting director that even if I am in the frame for just two minutes in such a great film, then it's good enough. It's a movie that anyone would want to be a part of, not only because of the cast but also because the story is also very strong. I feel it's going to be a hit. So, how is the shooting going on for the film? The shoot has been going on well. It is still going on. It's getting hectic these days as I am actually traveling back and forth between Hyderabad and Mumbai since I am doing a Telugu film in Hyderabad and Jazbaa in Mumbai.
For Jazbaa, Sanjay Gupta sir wants to shoot at real locations, so we have been shooting across Mumbai for it. As you mentioned that the shooting is still going on, they also tell us how is it shooting with Aishwarya, Irrfan, and Shabana Ma'am? Actually, I haven't started shooting completely yet. I haven't done proper scenes till now, so I am waiting for that. I have just met all of them at the script reading till now. Also, most of my scenes are going to be with Siddhant Kapoor and Shabana Ma'am. So how was your experience when you first met the whole cast of your film including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Irrfan Khan, Shabana Azmi, and Siddhant Kapoor? As I said, I met them at the script reading and everyone was so nice and warm toward me. I was really shocked as I never expected them to be so nice.
We always have an image in our head that these people have been in the industry for so long, so they may be very reserved towards me and I may feel pressure from them, but they were very good to me and made me feel like a part of a family. In fact, that day Aishwarya came up to me herself, we introduced each other, we shook hands and we also chatted for a while, then Shabana Ma'am came and gave me a hug. She asked me to tell her more about myself, so we all chatted for a few minutes too. It was a great feeling and every one of them was very humble. Siddhant is a friend for a long time, so it's great working with him too. When do you finish shooting for the film? I will finish my part by mostly the first week of April.
In the current schedule, I am now continuously shooting till the last week of March, then a couple of days of rest, then again back to shoot and I will complete the shoot by the first week of April. The film is not a commercial masala film, it is a bit in the unconventional zone. How do you feel making your debut in such a film? This film is similar to a film like Kahaani, this kind of movie come with a really strong message and it's also a women-centric film so it's really great. We need such kinds of films these days. I have always liked films that are more story-based and have a message in them, than a masala film. So, it's a dream debut. Jazbaa is also going to Cannes, so would we see you on the red carpet as well? Hopefully, yes.
It would be a dream come true to go to Cannes. When you have your first film premiering at the Cannes, then there is nothing better than that. We've heard that Aishwarya is doing a special dance video which will be shown at the end of the movie, will we see you shake a leg as well in the video? I can't talk about this right now. Actually, there is a lot still being decided, we still have to finish all the scenes, so there is time for the dance sequence. There will be promotional songs in the film, but you will find out about everything sometime very soon.
