Neeraj Chopra - Early Life, Family & Background

Neeraj Chopra was born to Satish Kumar and his wife. He comes from a humble family background residing in Khandra village of Panipat district. His father is a farmer and his mother is a housewife. He has two sisters.

Neeraj’s interest in javelin's throw happened by chance when he saw Jaiveer Choudhary practicing Javelin Throw at the Panipat stadium. He would regularly visit Panipat stadium to work on his fitness and lose weight as he was fat and chubby. Little did he know about the javelin throw until he tried his hands on the sport. His talent was spotted by the seniors at the stadium and inspired him to take up the sport seriously.

Neeraj had faced difficulty in traveling from his home to the stadium due to the lack of public transport in his village, instead, he would take lifts from the passing vehicles for a 16-17 kilometers journey to reach the training ground. He later shifted his base to the Athletics Nursery at the Taluka Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula because of the lack of proper infrastructure in the Panipat Stadium.

In 2016, he joined the Indian Army and is currently serving as a Junior Commissioned Officer with the rank of Naib Subedar. Neeraj is a graduate of DAV College in Chandigarh, Punjab.

Neeraj Chopra (Golden Boy of India) was born on 24th December 1997 in Khandra village, Haryana. He has become the first Indian to win Gold in athletics and the first post-independence Indian to win an individual Olympic gold in Athletics. Not only in sports, but he has also shown utmost dedication and pride in serving the Indian Army as a Junior Commissioned Officer. On 27 August 2021, Defence Minister Shri Rajanath Singh renamed the Army Sports Institute (ASI) stadium of Pune Cantonment to "Neeraj Chopra Stadium" in the honor of getting Gold for India in the Olympics.

Neeraj Chopra: Athletic career

1. Neeraj was always teased for obesity as a child after which his father enrolled him in a gym at Madlauda and later at Panipat. 
2. The javelin thrower Jaiveer Choudhary recognized his talent while he used to visit the Panipat Sports Authority. He was Neeraj's first coach as well. 
3. After that Neeraj was enrolled in Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Panchkula where he was trained by Naseem Ahmad. He learned the long run and javelin throw under him. He achieved the throw range of 55 meters but when he went to compete at Lucknow’s 2012 junior championship, he made a record throw of 68.40 meters. 
4. At the senior national match, he achieved a throw of 70 meters, and in the junior category, he threw a record of 81.04 meters. 
5. He then received a call from NIS Patiala where he went to train for the future. 
6. Neeraj's first medal was a silver at the Youth Olympics Qualification in Bangkok in 2014.
7. At the South Asian Games, Chopra threw a record 87.3 meters to win gold. 
8. 2016 was a good year again for him but he failed to qualify for the Rio Olympics due to a cut-off date clash. He won a gold medal in the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, and set a world junior record of 86.48 meters in the javelin throw.

Neeraj Chopra: Posting in the Indian Army

Neeraj Chopra was offered a post of Junior Commissioned Officer at the Rajputana Rifles in the army after the Indian Army was impressed with his performance at the South Asian Games. He was given a rank of Naib Subedar which is not a rank easily available for the athletes. 

He was formally inducted as a JCO in 2016 and was given leave to train.

• At the 2017 Asian Grand Prix Series, Neeraj Chopra has bagged Two Silver & 1 Bronze.
• At the Asian Athletic Championships 2017, Neeraj bagged a gold medal by covering a distance of 85.23 meters. The same year, he earned the 15th position at the World Championships with a distance covered 82.26 m.  
• At the Commonwealth Games of 2018, Neeraj dished out a clinical performance by winning a gold medal with a season-best effort of 86.47 meters, becoming the first Indian to win a javelin throw event t CWG.
• He broke the National record in May 2018 at the Doha IAAF Diamond League with a throw of 87.43 meters.
• In 2018, Neeraj won Gold in Sotteville Athletics Meet in France with an 85.17m throw.
• Neeraj Chopra clinched a gold medal with an 85.69 m throw at the 2018 Finland Savo Games.
• On 27 August 2018, Neeraj threw 88.06 m to win Gold in the men's javelin throw at the 2018 Asian Games and set a new Indian national record, bettering his previous one.
• He got a Silver Medal in the 2018 Offenburg Speersurf Meeting.
• By winning Gold in the 2020 Athletics Central North West League Meeting, South Africa, he qualified for the Summer Olympics.
