His parents were followers of Goddess Durga. So, from a very young age, he got interested in Bhajans as he was brought up in a religious environment in his house. He was among the most mischievous students in his class, due to which his teacher gave him the name Chanchal, which he later added to his actual name Narendra. He took music lessons from Sri Prem Tikha in Amritsar. Soon after which he started singing Aartis and Bhajans in his locality.
He sang his first song as a playback singer in Raj Kapoor's film 'Bobby' (1973), starring Rishi Kapoor & Dimple Kapadia. The song was "BeshakMandir Masjid Todo" whose, lyrics were given by Raj KaviInderjeet Singh Tulsi. After this song, he sang several songs in Bollywood. Out of which his most popular songs are Jai Mata Di of Asha, Baki Kuchh Bacha To Mahangayi Maar Gayi of Roti Kapda Aur Makan and Chalo Bulawa Aaya Hain Mata Ne Bulaya Hain of Avtar.
The popular religious singer, Chanchalji, was a good writer and poet and his writings were often published in newspapers. Though he made his mark in Bollywood, he still opted to concentrate on devotional music.
For his contribution, Narendra Chanchal was conferred with Raj Kapoor Memorial Award. He published his biography Midnight Singer which unfolds his life story and his struggle to achieve big in singing.
